Battery Tips

If you have electronics that can accidentally and easily be turned on, remove the battery. I find the Nikon DSLRs are easy to turn on by accident in a bag packed with other stuff when you are trying to fit everything in there. On trips I remove the battery until I arrive.

Also, avoid allowing batteries to touch metal when stored. The batteries can get drained that way.

Weather Report

The weather report for London and Cambridge has been changing daily. Currently, the average low is about 46 and the average high is about 66. Thunderstorms are now predicted for Sunday afternoon in London. You may want to have a few back up locations around the city you'd want to hang out at in case a big storm hits like the British Museum. Now there is no rain predicted for Cambridge on Monday.

Reminder that I won't be able to guarantee meal reservations at all the locations, so a timely arrival will help us get seated.

Here is an informal checklist of things to consider/doing before leaving:

Have itinerary for yourself and copy to me.

Call credit card company to alert them to your travel. If you are concerned about how to pay for things, you can consider a Travelex Passport card. You can get one in the basement of Selfridges department store at 400 Oxford near Bond Street. Note that you can't load these cards with money directly from a credit card. You'll need your cash.

Test run packing your bags.

Finish exams for advanced students.

If you need medications, make sure you have enough plus some days extra.

Brighton

I was looking up train times to and from Brighton on our Wednesday because my plans for Borough Market took a hit. So, I may or may not head down there.

As of now, there is a 7:48 departure from St. Pancras Station, which means about a 7:00 departure from Kent Hall on the tube. The train is scheduled to arrive at 9:18, and the Royal Pavilion opens at 9:30. Several more trains leave St. Pancras by 8:30. Of course, you can leave earlier.

Return ticket times are 7:34pm (arrive 8:47) and 8:04 (arrive 9:17) among others. The round-trip (known as "return" ticket) costs about $35.

Brighton is known for its hip, cool, cultural, music, fashion, gay, shopping and seaside scene.

What are recomondations to wear for shoes and clothing? Is there a good website where I can find forcasted weather? And a website on what to wear so I blend in and don't look like a tourist?

On Plane

Because we fly high and at night to London, the plane sometimes gets very cold. I've seen many students bury themselves under blankets. I suggest dressing for the cold. You will have the chance to pack a few items into your suitcase at the hotel before we head off. I usually bring one of those cold-weather skull hats and a jacket for the flight. I've known some people who bring a sweater or sweatshirt in their bag in case they need it.

One of my best friends is a flight attendant. He warns friends and family that they should clean tables because he's seen people put their feet on them and change baby diapers! Also, some airlines don't wash the blankets after every flight. The pillows may also be questionable.

I'm reading a Guardian story on the problems at GAP. There are some crazy fun quotes in the comment section:

"American clothing sucks, and it sucks big. Abercrombie and Fitch, GAP, even American Apparel ... leave them and go to Diesel, H & M, Zara, or La Redoute and get a bit of style in your life. It is no surprise that Europeans are the stylistas of the world."

I thought I'd post responses to questions and comments I've heard recently.

First, I don't know.

Second, Maybe.

Third, Why?

Seriously thought, here are some.

Passport holders? Not needed. I finally bought an Arsenal because I had a gift certificate from a soccer store. Unless you travel a lot, not a big deal.

Money? See the guide and the schedule and you will see that I recommend ATMs, call your credit card company ahead of time to warn them, and carry as much cash as you are willing to lose.

How much money will I spend? Tough one because we each spend differently. I have little saved this year due to state furloughs, so I will spend less than usual. If I win the Nigerian lottery, I'm ready to spend. I've heard $400 is a good estimate.

Do I really need a converter? If your charger doesn't automatically convert and you don't want to blow your stuff up, yes you need one. The chargers that convert automatically for England have numbers like 100-240 for INPUT printed on them.

Is Dr G leaving England? No, I need to stay in England at our base site. I need to be accessible to the majority of the students staying to join in American movie night with the Queen and me.

The Free Press is a logical place to grab dinner for our night in Cambridge. It is around the corner from my old flat. Thankfully, no smoking!

The Eagle is more famous for its history, but the Free Press is supposed to have better food. The Eagle's food is so-so.

FYI we will be leaving Cambridge about 6pm. Anyone wanting dinner will probably have to grab an early one.
